Trier. “How can the image of mulled wine at German Christmas markets be polished up?” This question was posed by the Trier Christmas Market Working Group 15 years ago. The answer was the invention of the “German Mulled Wine Queen” as a registered word and figurative mark. This year, 30-year-old teacher Louisa Kress once again holds this office between the main market square and the Domfreihof in Trier.
Louisa was already the representative for the traditional hot drink last year and has taken up the option to extend her term of office. “I'm really looking forward to being an ambassador for the mulled wine from the Moselle at the Trier Christmas market again. For me, it is a delicious cultural drink with a long tradition that is painstakingly handcrafted in the vineyards of the region,” says Louisa Kress.
So far, there have been eight dedicated mulled wine queens for a hot office
The first incumbent was the Trier student Nadine Thome in 2009, who was elected by a jury of experts for a two-year term of office. In 2011, the crown was handed over to her successor Tatjana Conrad. The 20-year-old was a European secretary from Serrig an der Saar. The third German Mulled Wine Queen, Sabine Braunert, also came from the same educational background. Born in Erfurt, she took office at the Domfreihof in 2012. Anne-Catherine Ferber was the first “Trier Wine Queen” to be crowned “German Wine Queen” in 2013. As the granddaughter of Trier winemaker Georg Fritz von Nell, the geography student had already learned about wine during cellar tours as a child. She then extended her term of office until 2014.
Another expert then followed in 2015. Sarah Schmitt made headlines as the longest incumbent. A student of food technology at Trier University of Applied Sciences at the time, she was actively involved in the “König Johann” family winery in Konz-Filzem. It was only after her three-year term of office that Jordis Schweigstill succeeded her for the 39th Trier Christmas Market on November 27, 2018. The 21-year-old was a commercial trainee at the Trier sparkling wine producer Saar-Mosel-Winzersekt GmbH. Verena Müller took over the position at the 40th Trier Christmas Market in 2019. Born in Trier, she worked as a retail sales assistant in Trier's city center.
There was no mulled wine queen in Trier during the coronavirus years. After a three-year break, Louisa Kress was once again the “German Mulled Wine Queen” at the 43rd Trier Christmas Market in 2023. The teacher and former wine queen in Trier-Olewig made a perfect comeback last year. This year, Louisa Kress is taking advantage of the extension and will remain a likeable ambassador for Winzerglühwein Deutsche at the 44th Trier Christmas Market. “At our Trier Christmas market, every guest experiences a special romantic magic amidst the sparkling lights. The award as the best Christmas market in Germany 2024 proves its uniqueness.”
The responsibilities of the German Mulled Wine Queen include press and public relations work for the mulled wine. In addition to personal appearances and welcoming groups of visitors from Germany and abroad, her tasks also include maintaining the Trier Christmas Market's Facebook and Instagram pages. With well over 21,000 Facebook fans, the Mulled Wine Queen has a special task here.
